Preparing for Furniture Assembly and Mounting

Assembly and mounting are common handyman jobs, but a little preparation makes the visit faster and more efficient. Here's what to have ready.

Why Preparation Matters for Assembly Jobs

Furniture assembly and mounting are straightforward, but the handyman's time is your cost. Everything you can prepare — unboxing, clearing space, having hardware ready — reduces the time the handyman spends on non-assembly work and keeps the visit focused.

What to Have Ready Before the Visit

1. Unbox and Inventory

Unbox the items and lay out all parts and hardware. Check the parts list against what's in the boxes — missing parts are common with flat-pack furniture and should be identified before the handyman arrives, not mid-assembly. If something's missing, contact the manufacturer for replacement before scheduling.

2. Clear Assembly Space

Clear enough floor space to assemble the item. For large furniture (beds, tables, large shelving units), this may mean most of the room. The handyman needs space to lay out parts, move around the item, and flip it during assembly.

3. Have the Instructions Available

Keep the assembly instructions. Even if the handyman has assembled similar items before, each manufacturer's process varies slightly. The instructions save time and prevent errors.

4. For Mounting: Identify the Wall Type

For items being wall-mounted (TVs, shelves, heavy mirrors, art), note the wall type: drywall, plaster, masonry, or tile. This determines the anchors needed. If you're not sure, a photo of the wall and a note about the home's age helps.

5. For TVs: Locate the Studs (If Known)

If you know where the wall studs are in the mounting area, note it. The handyman will confirm stud location on site, but any information helps. Also have the TV and the mount ready, with all mounting hardware.

6. Confirm the Location

Know exactly where you want the item assembled or mounted. For mounting, mark the position with painter's tape if possible. Changing the location mid-job wastes time and may mean extra holes in the wall.

What to Send in Advance

For assembly: the item name/model and approximate size, whether it's flat-pack or pre-assembled-just-needs-mounting, and the number of items. For mounting: the item, weight, wall type, and a photo of the wall area. This lets the handyman bring the right tools and anchors.

Common Assembly and Mounting Jobs

  • Flat-pack furniture (IKEA, Wayfair, etc.) — beds, dressers, tables, chairs, shelving
  • Wall-mounted shelves (floating shelves, bracket shelves)
  • TV mounting (on drywall, masonry, or with cord concealment)
  • Mirrors and heavy art (requires proper anchors)
  • Curtain rods and window treatments
  • Towel bars, grab bars, and bathroom hardware
  • Storage systems (closet shelving, garage storage)
  • Outdoor furniture and play equipment

What to Know About Mounting

Mounting is only as good as the anchor. Light items on drywall can use standard anchors. Heavier items — TVs, large mirrors, loaded shelves — need to anchor into studs or use heavy-duty anchors rated for the weight. The handyman assesses the weight and wall type to select the right anchor. Skimping on anchors is how mounted items end up on the floor.

How to Request Assembly or Mounting

List the items to assemble or mount, include model numbers if possible, send photos of the wall areas for mounting, and note the wall type. C&P will confirm scope and bring the right tools and hardware.
