Why Timing Matters for Outdoor Repairs

Complete Before Winter (September–November)

Replacing worn weatherstripping and door sweeps before winter prevents cold drafts and the moisture damage that follows. This is quick, inexpensive, and best done in fall.

Deck and Fence Repairs

Deck board replacement, fence post replacement, and exterior trim repair should be done before the ground freezes. Frozen ground makes post work difficult, and snow cover prevents inspection. Any structural issues in decks should be addressed before winter snow loads.

Exterior Painting and Staining

Paint and stain need minimum temperatures (typically 50°F and rising) to cure properly. Fall is the last window for exterior painting. Once temperatures drop consistently, exterior paint jobs should wait until spring.
