What to Send Before Your Fixture Installation

The quality of your fixture installation estimate depends on the information you send. Here's exactly what to include to get an accurate, useful response.

Why Pre-Visit Information Matters for Fixtures

Fixture installations are where the most common scope surprises happen. The handyman arrives expecting a simple swap and finds the new fixture needs a different mounting box, different connections, or modified dimensions. The right information sent before the visit prevents most of these surprises.

What to Send — The Checklist

1. Photos of the Current Installation

Photos are the single most useful piece of information. For light fixtures: a photo of the current fixture and, if possible, a photo of the junction box with the fixture removed (or a note that the fixture is currently installed and hasn't been removed yet). For hardware: a photo of the current mounting and the surrounding wall surface.

2. The New Fixture's Model Number

The model number lets the handyman look up the new fixture's dimensions, mounting requirements, and compatibility. This is more useful than a description — "a bronze ceiling light" could be many things. "Progress Lighting P2502-09" is specific.

3. Whether It's Like-for-Like or a Change

If the new fixture is the same type and approximate size as the old one, note that. If it's a different type (a chandelier replacing a flush mount, a ceiling fan replacing a light), note the change. Changes often mean additional work.

4. Wall Type for Mounting

For items that mount to walls (towel bars, shelves, TV mounts), note the wall type: drywall, plaster, masonry, or tile. This determines the anchors needed and the time involved. Mounting to masonry or tile takes longer than drywall.

5. Whether You Have the New Fixture in Hand

If you already have the fixture, note that. If it needs to be ordered or purchased, mention the timeline. Having the fixture on site before the visit is most efficient.

6. Any Known Issues with the Current Installation

If the current fixture flickers, if the junction box is loose, if the wall behind the current fixture has damage — mention these. They affect scope and may indicate a need for a licensed electrician.

What Not to Worry About Sending

You don't need to send the fixture's installation instructions (the handyman will use those on site), measurements of the existing fixture (photos cover this), or a description of the wiring (that's assessed on site if relevant). Focus on the model number, photos, and wall type.

The Outcome of Good Information

With this information, C&P can confirm scope before the visit, bring the right tools and anchors, and identify any items that need a licensed trade. Without it, the handyman arrives with assumptions — and assumptions are where scope surprises come from.
