What to Consider Before Replacing Light Fixtures

Fixture replacement seems simple — buy the new one, swap it for the old one. But there are a few things worth knowing before you start to avoid surprises and scope issues.

What Counts as a Fixture

Fixtures in a home include: light fixtures, ceiling fans, bathroom and kitchen faucets, towel bars, toilet paper holders, door hardware, switch plates, outlet covers, and similar installed items. Most fixture replacement is handyman scope — but not all.

The Like-for-Like Rule

The simplest fixture replacement is like-for-like: the new fixture mounts the same way, connects the same way, and is the same size as the old one. A ceiling light replaced with a new ceiling light at the same junction box. A towel bar replaced with a new towel bar at the same mounting points. These swaps are straightforward handyman jobs.

When the replacement is not like-for-like — different mounting, different connections, different dimensions — the job becomes more involved. A larger light fixture may need a new mounting box. A faucet with a different base may need the sink holes modified. These additions change the scope and the cost.

Electrical Fixtures: What's Handyman, What's Not

Swapping a light fixture or ceiling fan at an existing junction box is generally handyman scope. But:

  • Installing a fixture where there isn't an existing box (new wiring needed) is licensed electrician work
  • Installing a ceiling fan where there was only a light (fan-rated box needed) may require an electrician
  • Any work involving the wiring itself (splicing, extending, modifying) is licensed electrician work
  • Smart fixtures that require new switch wiring may need an electrician

Plumbing Fixtures: Wisconsin Regulations

Plumbing fixture replacement is more restricted in Wisconsin. Simple faucet replacement, toilet replacement, and similar work may require a licensed plumber depending on the specifics. If you're considering a plumbing fixture swap, mention it specifically in your request — C&P will clarify whether it fits handyman scope or needs a licensed plumber.

Hardware and Non-Electrical/Plumbing Fixtures

Towel bars, toilet paper holders, cabinet hardware, door hardware, curtain rods, shelf brackets, and similar non-electrical, non-plumbing items are straightforward handyman work. The main consideration is mounting — drywall anchors for light items, wall studs or appropriate anchors for heavier items like towel bars that take load.

What to Have Before the Visit

  • The new fixture(s), unboxed with all hardware and instructions
  • The model number, especially for electrical and plumbing fixtures, so the handyman can confirm compatibility
  • Photos of the existing installation, so the handyman can see the current mounting and connections
  • Any matching parts (for example, if you're replacing cabinet knobs and want to use the existing screws)

How to Request Fixture Replacement

List each fixture, include the model number if possible, send photos of the existing installation, and note whether the replacement is like-for-like or a change. This lets C&P confirm scope and identify any items that need a licensed trade — before anyone shows up.
